When compared with the average life expectancy from abstracts from censuses compiled by the Registrar General from 1841:

the Dore figures seem very poor as compared with Surrey the rural area. As the Dore figures were taken from the Parish Register if Burials it was surmised that the age was artificially low due to the deaths of residents of Dore who had been removed to the Ecclesall Bierlow Workhouse and had been buried elsewhere. This would seem likely when considering the factors which would lead one to expect a poor life expectancy such as overcrowding, or evidence of a high industrial workers death rate. As both these factors seem favourable to reasonable longevity in Dore and as the infant mortality and the rate of deaths among women of childbearing age compare favourably with the national figures, it would seem that Dore was not a particularly unhealthy place to live.

In 1851 there were 18 deaths among a population of 574 which is 31.4 per 1000 as compared with 28.2 per 1000 for Sheffield whereas in 1871 there were only 6 deaths in a population of 660 which is 9.0 per 1000 as compared with 28.2 per 1000 for Sheffield.
