William Ernest Green
William was born in 1899 and was only 19 when he was killed in Flanders in 1917. He was a Private in the 1st/4th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. He and his family lived in Onchan Villas on Causeway Head Road.
He was the son of Walter and Emily Green. Walter was a cutlery manufacturer, and William's paternal grandfather had owned an iron foundry in Ecclesfield. Perhaps if William had survived the Great War, he would have been involved in the family businesses.
His sister, Letitia Green, never married and continued to live at Onchan Villas long after the War. She was one of the earliest physiotherapists, and specialised in child polio patients.
