Declaration of Nature Emergency for Sheffield
On 21 May 2021 the Dore Village Society’s Committee of Trustees is joining with other organisations and many concerned individuals across Sheffield to declare a Nature Emergency for Sheffield.
We are convinced by the evidence of the level of biodiversity loss being experienced at home and abroad – from coral reefs to destruction of equatorial rain forests to species reductions and losses in our local countryside - that the world and our part of it is experiencing an escalating natural emergency. Such is the scale of losses that many distinguished scientists believe that the Earth is in the midst of its Sixth Mass Extinction Event. Previous mass extinctions have resulted from massive changes in the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere or from the impact of large extra-terrestial bodies or from massive volcanic activity; but this is the first time that a mass extinction is being primarily caused by humans through pollution, overconsumption, population growth and habitat loss.
