My father put up some decorations outside our house some days before Coronation Day. On the day itself our neighbours joined us to watch the ceremony on our black and white 12” Cossor television. There were ten of us gathered to watch the proceedings and we all enjoyed a buffet lunch. In the evening my family went to our neighbours next door for dinner. As a table decoration they had made a model of Mount Everest with tiny figures of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary on the summit. The successful outcome on May 29th of the Everest Expedition, led by Colonel John Hunt had been announced over the loudspeakers to the crowds lining the Coronation route. A really joyous and memorable day, and a great time that made you feel proud to be British.
In order to mark this special occasion The City of Cardiff Education Committee presented every secondary school pupil with a commemorative spoon, and I am very pleased to still have this in my possession.
