The Death of King George VI
When the King died I was at the Central technical School and a Prefect came into our classroom and said something to the teacher. He then told us to stop writing and go to the Main Assembly Hall. We were all assembled there and the Headmaster, Mr Wadge, marched down to the stage in his cap and gown with a grim look on his face. He then announced that the King had died at the age of 56. We had a short memorial service, sang God Save the Queen and returned to our classes.
The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II
At the Coronation there were about 3 families all crowded around Mrs Walker's 9" black and white TV set. She lived at 110 Townhead Road and theirs was the only TV set on our road. I can't remember any street parties at all.
